Peppermint and liquorice liqueur

Peppermint, one of the most widely used medicinal plants, is rich in antioxidants, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium and has an important refreshing effect. Compared to other types of mint, it has a higher menthol content, which makes it particularly popular in the pharmaceutical and confectionery industries. In addition to its common use as an aromatic herb for flavouring dishes, peppermint can also be used together with liquorice to create an excellent liqueur which can easily be made at home. Here is a step-by-step recipe.

Ingredients for Mint Liquorice Liqueur

  • 50g liquorice root

  • 300g of sugar

  • 30g of star anise

  • 1 litre of 90° alcohol

  • 1.5 litres of water

  • 10 leaves of peppermint

  • Peel of 1 lemon

How to make mint liquorice liqueur

Place the liquorice root in a fairly large glass jar (over 1 litre capacity) and cut it into pieces. Add the star anise, peppermint leaves and the thinly sliced lemon peel.

Place the alcohol in the jar, mix well and seal with a lid. Place the jar away from light and sources of moisture and leave it to macerate for a fortnight, taking care to shake the jar every two to three days.

After two weeks, dissolve the sugar in 1.5 litres of water in a pot and let it cool down. We filter the macerated alcohol, then add the cooled syrup.

We bottle the liqueur and store it in a cool, dark place for another two weeks before drinking.
