Easter sweets: the Calabrian cuzzupe

The cuzzupe, also called sgute or cuculi, are Calabrian sweets typical of the Easter period. Fragrant and delicious, they are perfect both for breakfast and as a snack.

Ingredients

  • 500 g of plain flour
  • 3 eggs
  • 175 g of sugar
  • 125 g of EVO oil
  • 100 ml of whole milk
  • 10 g of baking powder
  • Grated lemon zest

The recipe

In the mixer bowl with the whisk, add flour, sugar, oil and eggs (you will need two and a half, then add two whole ones and beat the third one adding only half to the mixture), then start kneading.

Add milk, baking powder and lemon zest, then knead until the mixture is soft and elastic.

Transfer the dough on a floured work surface giving it the shape you want. Take the rest of beaten egg and brush the cuzzupe.

Bake in a static oven preheated to 180° for about 20-25 minutes, take out of the oven and leave to cool the cuzzupe. If desired, sprinkle with powdered sugar to taste.
