Calabrian pignolata

Pignolata is a typical southern dessert that is prepared mainly during the Carnival period, but it is so tasty that it can be found in Calabrian pastry shops from Christmas onwards.

Calabrian pignolata. The ingredients

  • 1kg of flour
  • 6 eggs
  • 250g of sugar
  • 100g of seed oil for the dough
  • 1 litre of seed oil for frying
  • 500g of millefiori honey
  • A pinch of cinnamon

How to prepare Calabrian pignolata

Pour the flour, eggs, sugar, 100 grams of seed oil and a pinch of cinnamon into a bowl. Knead the mixture until it is soft.

Form cylinders (the correct size is about one finger), cut them into pieces and roll them up.

Fry the oil in a frying pan and dip them in it. When they are golden brown, drain and place them on absorbent paper. Melt the honey in a pan and dip them in it. Arrange them in a pyramid shape on a serving dish and serve the pignolata cold.
